Social Masking
Mixed media (oil, oil sticks, color pencils on cardboard/canvas/paper)
An ongoing painting series about the concept of deliberately hiding one's true self behind a metaphorical mask as an act to conform to societal expectations.
This work is an introspective process as I paint my face in different emotional states, exploring challenging questions about my identity, artistic purpose, and the authenticity of my work. It is to contemplate on how I feel, how am I perceived by others, and whether I am prepared to reveal my true self.
Masking is done to present our best selves or to create a protective barrier between our inner and the outer worlds.
The process consists of two phases: the initial graphic works layered with mixed media—oil paint, oil sticks, and pencils—obscuring the original face: you no longer see it but you still know it is there.
